At least $30 billion is spent treating obesity-related conditions in the United States every year. While researchers suspect genetic and environmental factors may influence obesity, effective treatment options remain limited. Dr. Marc Reitman of the National Institutes of Health reviews current information on obesity and related complications. He also describes how a limited amount of fat can contribute to overall health.

Wow. Just because it isn't set up like the infotainment you see on the Discovery Channel, doesn't mean it's boring.

Black women tend to have more obesity, but how are you measuring this? BMI? Just adding weight to a persons frame (whether fat or lead weights) over time will cause an increase in muscule weight. Perhaps this is why Black women can weigh more and yet have a better health risk. I'd like to see a fat percentage of the total body weight as being a more accurate way to develop theories about medical risks rising from obesity.

There are plenty of other health problems in other countries. In poor Asian countries a lot of people live almost completely off rice and definitely aren't taking any multivitamins, so they lack a lot of nutrition, which can be just as dangerous. Also, I disagree that genetics play a greater role, than willpower. I used to be pretty fat and my mom and brother are both obese. I skateboard and eat healthier no and I'm in good shape. They don't. I eat plenty, but I eat things that are nutritional.

Just read a recent article on a two year in depth study on obesity avg weight loss over 2 years was a mere 5 - 10 lbs. I believe genetics play a greater role than "willpower" Takes me a year suppliments and weight training to gain 10-20 lbs, and I lose it back in 2 weeks sweating and working in the summer.
